3 Ultimate Wheelchair Dog Walking Solutions
We all know a big part of being a responsible dog owner is taking your dog out for a walk. But it’s not that easy from a seated position, and on four wheels at that. And the fact that most dogs aren’t bright enough to stay away from your wheels so the leash doesn’t get caught up doesn’t help.
But it’s not a lost cause by any means. There are several ways you can walk a dog from your wheelchair, but the method you choose depends on two big things 1) The type of wheelchair you have, a manual or power and 2) The height and weight of the dog. These two things will have a great impact on safety.
If you have a smaller dog (anything under 20 pounds) the first product in our list, the Hound-a-Bout, a “hands-free dog walking system,” may be the ultimate solution for you. This wheelchair dog walking system works by having a retractable leash in on aluminum tube attached to the back of the chair.
As the dog walks, the leash retracts giving it plenty of room to walk around on its own. I personally know the owner of this dog walking system too. He’s a paraplegic and passionate about his dogs; a great small company to support. Check it out: Hound-a-Bout
If you have a larger dog, our next wheelchair dog walking solution may be better for you. Called the Bike Tow Leash, this sweet leash was initially created for bike riders who want to walk their dog as they bicycle.
What’s really cool about this leash is that it attaches to the base of your wheelchair, preferably somewhere near the back to prevent the leash from getting caught in your wheels. Check it out: Bike Tow Leash
Our last wheelchair dog walking solution, SCI Leash, is the latest method offered to the
public courtesy of Brian Nguyen, a paraplegic and dog owner. He developed this product after nearly getting pulled out of his wheelchair by his dogs, and right now he’s knee-deep in a Kickstarter campaign so he can fully launch it. He’s trying to get $10,000 by Jan. 11th, 2014.
The way the SCI Leash works is simple – it’s a “side leash.” An aluminum rod is fused on the side of the chair with the leash inside as well, near the footrest, giving you full control of your hands. Never again will you have to worry about dropping your leash, and it even works with multiple dogs. Check it out: SCI Leash
Our pets, our canine companions, they really do help our lives immensely. It’s about time decent leashes for the wheelchair-user and devoted dog have finally been invented.
