Dream, Believe, and Work to Achieve!

Hello and Happy Holidays Friends! This seems to be the time of year when most people seriously consider making changes, mainly in the form of New Year’s Resolutions, to their lives.  I want to share with you a proven formula that not only can the parents and adults who are reading this use in your daily lives, but just as importantly, share with your children and teens with disabilities, who can certainly benefit immensely as well.  One’s attitude, where the only true place a disability can reside, will be the only barrier to reaping the benefits on this winning formula.  Through countless presentations to K-12 kids, even corporate presentations, and my personal coaching practice, sky’s the limit when one Dreams, Believes, and Works to Achieve.™

DREAM.  Now this is not the type of dreaming that you do when you are sleeping.  Those can be exhilarating or sometimes frightening.  The DREAM that I am talking about is also known as imagery or creative visualization.  It requires you to close your eyes and bring in all the sights, sounds, colors, people, etc. as if you were beginning to paint a picture on a blank canvas.  What does this mean?  This means you can go anywhere you want and see yourself in any light you wish.  Personally, I visualize myself walking and doing things on my feet.  After doing this for a number of years, I can honestly say that this visual becomes more clear every day.  This first time I ever did this was when I was in Hawaii in 1999 right before I did a firewalk on my hands.  I visualized holding my wife’s hand with one hand and a child’s hand with the other…hopefully my own child’s hand as I was told I would no longer be able to father my own child.  Now, I have two children of my own!  I really believe this entire formula beginning with the DREAM had so much to do with turning that dream into a reality!

Disability Confidence - Believe In YourselfBELIEVE.  This is the most important part of the equation that I call the glue to the formula.  It is not in the middle by coincidence.  When you put the power of BELIEF behind anything, I am truly convinced that anything is possible.  Take that visual and insert the emotions you will feel when, not if, this happens.  This is a confidence, an unshakeable BELIEF that you can do it and make it happen.  If needed, remind yourself of where you have this level of confidence, this level of certainty in another part of your life and transfer it to your latest dream.

WORK.  I have met so many people who have awesome dreams and that unshakeable belief that I just discussed, but don’t take action and therefore find themselves missing that sense of accomplishment that we are all seeking.  This is not DREAM AND BELIEVE TO ACHIEVE.  As the singer RuPaul sang, “You better WORK!”  This is taking action on the dream and belief that you have cultivated.  Sometimes the WORK comes in the form of baby steps while at other times, there will be giant leaps.  If I told you that I had a box with a million dollars in it and all you had to do was WORK for it, how many of you would respond by saying, “I’d do anything to get million bucks!”  I am quite sure a large majority of you would which makes so much sense.  What if I told you that those dreams, aspirations, and desires that you have residing within you at this very moment are worth far more than that million dollars.  If you have the DREAM and you BELIEVE, than the time has come for you to WORK and make it happen.  And don’t forget, sometimes our dreams don’t come true, but rest assured, a bigger and brighter and dream is waiting for you. DREAM, BELIEVE, AND WORK TO ACHIEVE™!! Enjoy the journey!

What steps are you taking to make your dreams come true in the New Year and beyond?
