The start to each new year is always my favorite time of year as we begin to welcome people and children with disabilities, as well as recently wounded soldiers, from all over the world to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Access Anything, Adaptive Adventures, and STARS (Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports) team up each season to expand the opportunities for recreation for people with disabilities in hopes of encouraging these people to get out and live life to its fullest by experiencing outdoor recreational activities such as alpine skiing. The adult camp in January is geared toward intermediate and advanced level skiers and riders and wounded soldiers, and our kid’s camp is geared towards children 8-18 years old and caters to all ability levels.
Since 2006, Steamboat has welcomed more than 300 disabled skiers and riders for these camps alone and with the formation of STARS, the new adaptive sports program in town, these camps look to grow more each year and reach out to even more people with disabilities. The STARS camps are a great opportunity for people who want to try new things but are not sure of their own abilities. We really encourage everyone to get involved no matter what the disability, as adaptive sports are, and should be, for everyone. In my world, nobody gets left out! So my recommendation is to get out and play, try something new, and accomplish something that you never thought you could accomplish. This will give you a great sense of pride and independence.
