How to Choose the Right Wheelchair Company

It is no secret that choosing a good durable medical equipment vendor can be a daunting task. Knowing just a few simple things can make the search for a competent rehab provider much easier.

The first thing to remember is that the process of obtaining a piece of  medical equipment (such as a wheelchair or standing frame) funded through Medicare, Medicaid, or other insurance carriers should always start with the physician or PT/OT clinician.

Here are a few questions you should ask when deciding which rehab or medical equipment company to use.

* Is the DME/Rehab company accredited?
* Does the company employ wheelchair specialists who carry the designation of ATP through RESNA or CRTS thru NRRTS?
* Can the company provide references from both patients and clinical facilities?
* How long has the company been in business?
* Does the company have a technician dedicated solely to the repair of wheelchairs?
* How long does the process normally take?
* Does the company offer loaner chairs when service is being done on your wheelchair?

Asking these questions and taking the time to do a little homework on the company can save a lot of headaches and frustration. Your local clinical facility often can give you a good recommendation on the supplier also. There are lots of resources on the web that can be helpful as well, such as the EasyStand Supplier Locator.

Just remember to take your time and pick a vendor that will meet your needs AFTER the sale.
