School will be starting soon. Are you scared? Or are you looking forward to all the fun you’re about to have? Going back to school can be extra stressful if you have a disability. It’s not always easy being the different one. But don’t let your disability get in the way. Here are some tricks to look forward to school and HAVE FUN!
- Be proud of your toughness! Sometimes we want to be like everyone else because it’s easier, but never forget how tough you are. Having a disability isn’t easy, but you are strong. Remember that. Be proud of how well you handle what you can’t do. It takes lots of strength to be an active kid with a disability. And you are awesome! Use that strength to go to school with a big smile on your face. Love who you are everyday!

- Join groups to make new friends: Having a disability can make it hard to join after-school groups that require physical abilities you may not be able to do (like soccer or dance). But just like Artie in Glee, the wheelchair-using cutie everyone loves, you can join theater, choir, or show choir just like him. It’s easier than ever for kids with disabilities to join these groups and fit in. Don’t be shy and join in on the fun!
- Dealing with teasing: Being teased by a bully can put the brakes on any fun you may have at school, and dealing with bullies isn’t an easy thing. Ignore bullies at first, but if they keep on teasing, tell your teacher. While no one likes a tattler, bullies are breaking lots of rules and need to be stopped. The best way to prevent bullying is to report it to your teacher right away. And if the bully gets mad, who cares (there were never going to be your friend in the first place, right?)
- Church groups are great: If you like being in a smaller groups of kids, check out youth groups at your church, or if you don’t go to church, see if any churches by you have classes that you might like. And see if any of your friends at school are in any church groups too, and ask to go along to see what it’s like. Church groups are full of friendly people who love all types. Fun activities like camp-outs, game nights, and field trips are just some of the fun things you may do.
As the first day of school gets closer, remember these tips above to keep yourself strong AND busy! As long as you remain tough with the bullies, and have at least one after-school activity you love, you’re on the right track to having an awesome school year. Have fun!
What other ways do you make friends and stay busy after-school? How do you go about meeting new people or handling teasing?
