If you are a parent like I am, you know that books are a great way to teach kids about…well just about anything, from life lessons to potty training. What you may not know is that there are a lot of great books available that can educate kids about others like them who have a disability.
I recently came across this blog post on Disaboom titled “Best Books for Special-Needs Kids” and thought it might be useful information to share with all of you. These books are great for teaching kids with disabilities that they are not alone. Kids enjoy hearing stories about other people who are like them and face the same challenges as they do. There are books for children from preschool to middle school that teach how acceptance and friendship are important for children of all abilities. Disaboom lists over 20 of the best books that they found, take a look!
Do you have a favorite book to add to this list? Has reading books like this impacted your child?

We love the Little Critter books at our house because they teach lessons in their stories in such a cute way… it is great to see the authors addressing bigger issues then bath time and new siblings.
I recently ordered this “special critter” book from our library for my son. He liked it and it brought up some questions which is always good. Alex (the kid in the wheelchair) could use a sportier chair though :)
As a disabled person I am always pleased to see a new children’s book series that deals with disabilities. When I was growing up I can only recall reading one book that dealt with the subject. For that reason, some time after I graduated college I wrote and released my first children’s book with a disabled main character. I’m proud to say The Adventures of Baby Jaimie now has two books in the series and I am currently working on a third.
@Jaimie congrats on your children’s book series! Wonderful to hear that we have more books out there about kids with disabilities! Thanks for sharing!
