International Seating Symposium Shines Once Again

This is a post on the EasyStand Blog by Nancy Perlich, COTA/ATP, Funding & Reimbursement Specialist at Altimate Medical Inc.

Wes Ovre (Product Development), Andy Hicks (Sales) and I attended the 25th International Seating Symposium this past week in sunny Orlando. The Seating Symposium continues to draw the best and the brightest clinicians and suppliers, which was very evident by the interesting selection of presentations and papers to attend throughout the week.

This year’s keynote speech was given by Jean Minkel PT, ATP who has been very active in our Complex Rehab world, presenting and attending for much of the Symposiums existence. Ms. Minkel’s speech was titled Expertise and Partnership. One point in the Keynote, really struck home with me…Jean stated, “As professionals to be truly effective in an Interactive Model of Care, we need to examine our communication skills. Do we truly listen for answers, or do we ask questions, just to ‘complete’ our evaluation.”

This statement really made me think, in general terms first, do I really listen to what people are saying to me?

Then as a manufacturer involved in the Interactive Model of Care, do I really listen to what my customers are saying to me?

My personal take away message from Jean Minkel’s Keynote was: As a manufacture of Complex Rehab devices involved in a part of the Model of Care, I need to stop, step back, and make sure I am listening to what the suppliers, clinicians and most importantly, the consumers are saying to me.

The International Seating Symposium continues to be a fantastic place for the rehab professionals to come together.  Manufacturers, suppliers, and clinicians creating relationships, gathering tools and information, to work towards a common goal: helping our customers live a higher quality of life.

Have you been to the International Seating Symposium? Did you find the conference met your expectations?  What other conferences or expos have you attended or plan on attending?
