This is a post on the EasyStand Blog by Mark Schmitt.
I attended the Annual American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in Las Vegas earlier this month with my co-worker Kevin. I love Vegas and all its trappings. I also think it is a great place to do business. Everybody seems to like being in Vegas. The show was huge with over 8000 physical therapists and students attending. We had three days of exhibiting and holy cow, the therapists know their stuff. We were showing the new EasyStand Bantam pediatric stander and the buzz was that it does a lot more than our previous stander, the Magician. Now I hope we can get enough Bantam demos in the field to keep the therapists happy.
I feel I am a fairly attuned person when it comes to travel, but on this trip I really have to question that assessment. I went to Vegas with under-inflated tires and the miles and miles of carpet we had to push through reminded me daily that I was not thinking. My friend and fellow wheelchair user, Laurie Rappl, said out of the blue, “happiness is properly inflated tires”. I did not have the courage to tell her I screwed up. Speaking of Laurie, she got a great new job that uses her skills as a Physical Therapist and her lifelong passion of combating wound care. She is now working for Cytomedix. She is also an EasyStand devotee.
We booked rooms at the pyramid shaped Luxor both for the price and the location next to the Mandalay Bay where the APTA Show was held. I wanted to stay there because of the cool elevators or inclinators. Unfortunately they do not have disabled rooms above the third floor so I never got around to riding the inclinator. Bummer.
My travel in a few weeks includes Arkansas, Tennessee, and of course the International Seating Symposium in Orlando, Florida.
What experiences have you had with traveling in a wheelchair? How do you avoid travel mishaps?
